VIP hate speeches rise 500%, under Modi

The use of hateful and divisive language by high-ranking politicians has increased almost 500% in the past four years, an NDTV data collection exercise has found.
  • A day, or a week doesn't go without some senior politician - a member of Parliament, minister, MLA or even Chief Minister making a hateful comment, be it in the language of bigotry or calling for violence. The rise in use of social media by politicians has only amplified this disturbing trend.
  • NDTV collated the data from public record, internet, as well as using their reporters, scanning nearly 1,300 articles and going through 1,000 most-recent tweets of top politicians and public figures. NDTV says that this is not a perfect record, and doesn't claim to be comprehensive.
  • From May 2014 to the present, there have been 124 instances of VIP hate speech by 45 politicians, compared to 21 instances under UPA 2, an increase of 490%. 90% of hateful comments made during the NDA's current terms are by BJP politicians.
  • During UPA-2, 21 political leaders made hateful comments, of which 3 instances (14 %) were from the Congress, which anchored the coalition. Politicians from the BJP took the lead, recording 7 instances of hate speech.
  • Of the 45 leaders responsible for hate speech since the Modi government came to power, in only find six cases (only 5% of all instances) of evidence of a politician being reprimanded or cautioned, or issuing a public apology. 95% of the time, the 'VIP hater' faced no consequence.
  • In at least two cases, hate speech appears to have paid off.
  1. Yogi Adityanath, the current CM of UP, was a MP from UP when, in Nov 2015, he said "There is no difference between the language of Shah Rukh Khan and that of Hafiz Saeed". In Sep 2014, he ascribed the rise in riots in Western UP to the population growth of a minority community. "In places where there are 10 to 20% minorities, stray communal incidents take place," he said. "Where there are 20 to 35% of them, serious communal riots take place and where they are more than 35%, there is no place for non-Muslims." In all, there are 6 instances of hate speech by the UP CM. All were made before he was promoted to his current office.
  2. Anant Kumar Hegde was a BJP MP from Karnataka when, in Mar 2016, he said, "As long as we have Islam in the world, there will be no end to terrorism. If we are unable to end Islam, we won't be able to end terrorism." In Sep 2017, he was promoted as Union Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Since 2014, Mr Hegde has made seven such hate speeches. Three months after being made union minister, in Dec 2017, Mr Hegde declared that the party would remove the term "secular" from the Constitution, saying "These people who call themselves secularists are like people without parentage or who don't know their bloodline."
  • Mr Hegde is one of three serial 'VIP haters' in poll-bound Karnataka. Shobha Karandlaje, a  MP from Karnataka and the general secretary of the Karnataka BJP, has posted at least nine hateful tweets since June last year. Pratap Simha, another MP from Karnataka, has also posted four hateful tweets since September last year.
  • In further proof that hate has no consequence on the careers of political leaders, at least 21 political leaders (or 48%) had recorded more than one instance of hate speech. They were not reprimanded for their hateful comments, nor did they issue apologies. Prominent amongst them is T Raja Singh, a BJP MLA from Telangana, who has repeatedly made public speeches inciting violence. In Nov 2017, he threatened to burn down theatres screening "Padmavat." Since Dec 2015, Mr Singh has made at least ten hateful comments.
  • BJP MP Subramanian Swamy has written hateful tweets against Muslims, posting at least 17 of these since Sep 2017.
  • The reluctance of BJP to crack down on its hate speech 'offenders' is due to the fact that the its top leadership does not seem averse to playing the communal card, albeit using veiled language. Prominent amongst such instances are speeches by BJP party president Amit Shah, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.
"If there is a cemetery in the village, there should be a crematorium as well; If there is electricity on Ramzan, it should be there on Diwali as well; there shouldn't be any discrimination," Mr Modi had said in Feb 2017, during an election rally in Fatehpur, UP, in the run-up to the assembly elections that his party swept.
  • During the same campaign, Amit Shah sparked controversy with this comment: "If by any mistake, BJP loses, the victory and defeat may be in Bihar but fire crackers will go off in Pakistan."
  • Read the source article for complete list of hate speeches by BJP and UPA leaders.

Hate speeches are the hall mark of BJP's propaganda, especially during elections and during parliamentary debates. Modi goes way beyond others with deep desire to eliminate all national parties and establish monopoly of Hindutva forces paving the way for Hindu Rashtra. He fails to understand federal cooperation with states, diversity of the nation and the need to have balanced approach for unity & integrity of the nation. His facial expressions and body language evidently expresses his thoughts, intentions and actions. With his intolerance, arrogance coupled with lack of skills required for administering a large nation, and India was so much divided today like never before. For the first time since liberalisation in 1992, Indian economic outlook was so much distressed. Modi must be credited with shooting at the Tyres of the racing car (Indian Economy) without having an iota of what he was doing with his hare brained demonetisation and senselessly designed & hurried roll out of mangled GST.

VIP abuse must be eliminated everywhere

Today VVIPs & VIPs in India exceed 5,79,092 and invariably all these use flashing beacon lamps on the top of their cars. Some criminals, businessmen and adventurous people use them unauthorisedly. Indians have long resented this VIP culture as a public nuisance. While the beacon light users consider it as a privilege and the ultimate status symbol, the use & misuse of the beacons has become a menace to society.

What Kejriwal (Delhi CM) & Capt Amarinder Singh (Punjab CM) has done away on day one, Modi as PM did so after three years - banning of red beacon vehicle top flashing lights, a symbol of VVIP status after enjoying the same for about 15 years as CM & PM. Union ministers M Venkaiah Naidu and Kiren Rijiju have never used them. While former four didn't get any publicity, Modi could generate extraordinary publicity, with no expenditure. Anyways, better late than never. The Supreme Court on Dec 10, 2013 asked government to trim the list of people who can use red beacons. After 3.5 years, BJP is trying to do politics and blow the trumpet of morality.

However this is only a first step and much more needs to be done to eradicate this awkward VVIP culture that crept into society deeply, craved by most and resented by all. All citizens must be at par at all times and at all places, irrespective of any qualifiers. The only exceptions are humanitarian considerations such as senior citizens, pregnant woman, handicapped and sick persons.

Any person jumping the queues must be penalized heavily and willful repetitions must result in prosecution & jail sentence.

Injustice anywhere threatens justice everywhere
... Martin Luther King Jr

My View:
These days every person with pocket full of money feels that he is a VIP and superior to others and is willing to manage or buyout priority treatment at the expense of others, shamelessly. VIP security is mostly false and over emphasized, which is considered an ultimate status symbol. Over 50% politicians are entangled in criminal cases. Why should government provide security to criminals facing charges or under trial? Government should revisit and revise norms to provide adequate security to genuine and deserving cases only in public interest. All charged with criminal offences should have their private security only. In case of others, the expenditure should be recovered from the so called VIP, where ever possible.

VIPs abuse common man in every sphere of civic life. In govt offices, hospitals, temple queues and everywhere. Equating all people just in traffic alone is not enough. Everywhere this abuse must be eliminated. Modi, known for rhetoric, narratives, publicity & manipulations rather than sincerity of purpose, having got enough publicity may not walk the talk to eradicate this ubiquitous VIP culture in India.

VIP Culture in India

      VIP's in the world
Country          Numbers
England ...             84
France ...             109
Japan ...               125
Germany ...          142
Australia ...           205
USA ...                 252
S.Korea ...           282
Russia ...             312
China ...              435
  India ...         5,79,092

  • Today VIP culture in India is omnipresent. The President, Vice President, Governors, Speakers (Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha, Assemblies), MPs, MLAs, MLCs, Corporators, IAS, IPS, ICS, IRS officers, Taluk/Gram Panchayat members, Party leaders, Chief justice and judges of Supreme and High Courts, Media barons and Editors are treated as VIPs and VVIPs. Disgraceful and disgusting.
  • How did we develop this culture when our founding fathers shunned pompous security?
  • In the 1970s, in Bombay city, only the Governor and the Chief Minister displayed non-flashing red lights on their vehicles. The CM had only a motorcycle pilot and a very low profile jeep escort. No Cabinet minister, bureaucrat or police officer displayed such lights.
  • Bureaucrats in Secretariat, who felt that they were VIP's, changed the rules, allowing themselves rooftop lights. Ministers followed suit. Terrorism gave an excuse for all to travel with heavy intimidating escort vehicles.
  • In Mumbai and Delhi, corporate honchos travel in big cars escorted by their safari clad bodyguards in SUVs resembling police protection units, waving their walkie-talkie sets through open windows intimidating other drivers, pretending to be government escorts.
  • The explanation that red lights are necessary for VIP security is untenable.
  • There is no just reason for exempting all self proclaimed VIPs from security checks in Indian Airports other than those holding constitutional positions, Cabinet/Chief Secretary, Chief Justice and three defense chiefs, as listed in *.
  • Visiting heads of the foreign countries do qualify for VIP security and protection.
  • Definitely Income Tax Commissioner or Brigadier doesn't qualify for any such privilege.
  • All over the world, colored beacons are allowed only on emergency vehicles travelling on emergency duties. Blowing sirens is strictly forbidden, unless in cases of emergency.
  • In Delhi, VIP security budget for 2013 was Rs.341 crores of which Rs.38 crores was spent for Rashtrapati Bhavan. About 8049 policemen are deployed for protection of VIPs in Delhi.
  • Only emergency vehicles, constitutional posts* and highest judicial/ civil/ defense officers* shall only be allowed to display red lights. No siren should be allowed except in emergency.
  • Misuse of the state machinery in blocking roads to give priority passage to VIPs, "flashing red lights" atop their cars and blowing sirens to intimidate the public must be stopped.
  • The underlying reason is corruption & power, at which most of so called VIPs are experts. Even media is also a party to it. These are those selfish VIP's who even while earning crores of money don't like to spend it. Instead they put the burden of their personal or lavish expenditures on the exchequer. This attitude has to be condemned and stopped.
  • Those who face threats should be provided unobtrusive escorts but without any power trappings like red beacons, on payment basis at twice the actual cost.
  • Long convoys, exceeding 5 vehicles, should never be allowed.
  • Police must abide by Model Police Act which insists police enforce law "impartially" by behaving "courteously" with the public.
*President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Leader of the Opposition, Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Chief Election Commissioner, Cabinet Secretary, Three Chiefs of Defense only should be allowed to display red lights in NCT of Delhi.

*Governor, Chief Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Speaker, Leader of the Opposition, Chief Justice of High Court, Chief Secretary only should be allowed to display red lights in state capital.

Today, politicians or political parties doing self less social service is a myth. They do self service in the disguise. They are in fact parasites on society. They terrorize people and civil servants with the help of their shouting brigade of musclemen or with higher connections. Most politicians are power brokers for businessmen or they themselves are businessmen. Public interest is very unsafe in their hands. They definitely don't qualify for any VIP treatment. They must stand at par with all citizens for availing any services. The number of VIPs in any state must not exceed 25 at state level and 50 at national level. In any case traffic should never be obstructed for more than few minutes with due regard to civil discomfort and never obstructing emergency vehicles like ambulances, fire brigade and police vehicles etc.

Worse than this is, VIP's breaking queue and availing extended leisurely darshan at Tirumala temple. Much worse is they have separate timing for their priveleged 'Break Darshan'. Anyone with some kind of connection or willing to spend Rs.10k/20k will get this immoral facility. The excuse is as usual is their security. Suprabatam & Kalyanotsavam tickets are never available at counter or online. Like our Railway's 'Tatkal', TTD must charge these VIP's Rs.10k to Rs.25k and make more money to extend more common pilgrim facilities. In any case there must a limit 25% for these absurd VIP's.

Our government elected by common man is committed for security & comfort of these VIP's at any cost, but never for common man.
